Foreshadowing
A literary device in which an author drops subtle hints about plot development in the story.
Example from the text:
When Jack and Ralph fight and have a contest over the leadership, this foreshadows the lack of contentment and disruption that Jack shows over Ralph's leadership later on in the book.
Piggy, chapter 1: "we may die before we get off this island"
Foreshadowing- A literary device used in which an author drops subtle hints about the plot development in the story which is relevant to the future of the characters.
Example from the text-
“something dark was fumbling along.” “The creature was a party of boys” (line 15-16, 20. Page 26). Indeed the creature is this party of boys, the choir, whom become the self-created monster on the island. They are proud at the start of the book that they are English boys and not savages, but a few upsets in the book lead to English boys to become the monster, terrorising the other boys on the island.
“Isn’t there a ship, then?” (Jack, line 13, page 27). Later in the book there is a ship, and most likely it would have saved the boys from the island, but Jack has taken the hunters/choir and they let the fire out, so there is in fact a ship, but Jacks ‘short-sightedness’ answers his own question.
Foreshadowing
The act of providing vague advance indications; representing beforehand Pg.26: The author displays the group of choirboys walking along the beach as a black creature. This foreshadows the existence of the ‘beastie’ that comes up later in the story
